Inspiring excellence in Celtic performing arts through quality education and programming. - College of Piping, PEI
As a means of celebrating the new millennium, the College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada, located in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, formed the Canada Millennium Youth Pipe Band. This unique cultural living and learning experience took place during the summer of 1999 and was comprised of some of Canada's finest pipers and drummers. The band, as seen above, was outfitted in the new National Millennium Tartan.
The band's performers, chosen from each province across Canada, were selected for their outstanding abilities as both players and ambassadors for their respective provinces. The band had wonderful direction under acting Pipe Major Ian Whitelaw from the World Champion Simon Fraser University Pipe Band. Also, representing the province of Ontario was Jason Briscoe from the World Champion 78th Fraser Highlanders, the first Canadian band to win the World Pipe Band Championships in Scotland. Representing the province of Nova Scotia was Matt MacIsacc from the Halifax Police Pipe Band. In 1997, Matt won all the top solo prizes in Scotland for players under the age of 18, and then in 1998, went on to win first place in the Silver Medal Solo Piping Competition at the Argyllshire Gathering at Oban. Those are simply a few of the highly talented musicians that helped make the band such a success.
From the first day the performers arrived in PEI, they had their work cut out for them. With less than one week of practice and rehearsals, the band, along with a contingent of Highland Dancers outfitted in each of Canada's ten provincial tartans, took part in two Military Tattoo performances. The Tattoos brought together a cast of more than three hundred to celebrate the millennium theme along with the 75th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force, and proved to be a complete success.
The Millennium Band members were also given the opportunity to take place in the Sumrside Highland Gathering band and solo competitions. The band placed 1st in its March, Strathspey, and Reel competition, and 2nd in the Medley. Not bad considering the short period of time the band had been together for. Just more proof of the band's talented players. A number of the band members also did very well in the solo competitions.

Several more performances were scheduled for Canada Day celebrations which took place in the College Amphitheatre.
At the end of the two weeks, the Millennium Pipe Band members headed back to their home cities and towns having participated in a unique and wonderful cultural experience. On a personal note, being probably the least skilled and experienced player in the band, I can certainly attest that it was a wonderful experience being associated with such talented players and that the friendships built during those two weeks will be cherished forever. Also, my being awarded the most outstanding ambassador overall, by all the other band members was an absolute honor. The Director of the College of Piping, Scott MacAulay, along with the rest of the staff at the College were wonderful hosts throughout the band's stay and deserve to be commended as the Canada Millennium Pipe Band initiative was a resounding success.
