CBC's Production – Canada: A People's History

An epic television documentary series on Canada's past, being produced jointly by the CBC and Radio-Canada, as the Corporation's Millennium Project. The goal of the series is to present the great themes and events of Canadian history in a way that will engage the imagination, emotion, and intelligence of the largest possible audience across the country. The series intends to tell the stories of Canada's past in the words of the people who were involved - mainly through letters, diaries, memoirs and other first-person accounts. The portrait will be socially wide-ranging, including vignettes on political leaders and domestic servants, captains of industry and fur-trade voyageurs, factory workers and great explorers.

The series will be produced simultaneously in English and French, with the main production units located in Toronto and Montreal. As far as possible, the individual episodes will be produced jointly by both the CBC and Radio-Canada. The series will comprise about 30 hours of television, covering all of Canada's past from the arrival of the first inhabitants more than 12 000 years ago to the last decades of the 20th century. It will be broadcast over two years, beginning in the year 2000. The first season will take the story approximately up to Confederation; the second season will cover the period from Confederation to the present. While the structure is roughly chronological, each episode will be organized around one or two main themes. Preliminary filming began in July 1997 aboard the replica of John Cabot's ship, the Matthew, in the waters off Newfoundland and will span across Canada to the West Coast and the Arctic. Mark Starowicz heads the project as the Executive Producer of the series. Louis Martin is the Editorial Director for Radio-Canada and Gene Allan (Ph.D. in Canadian History) is the Director of Research. The series' main historical advisors are: Dr. Ramsay Cook (general editor of the Dictionary of Canadian Biography); Dr. Jean-Claude Robert (University of Quebec in Montreal); Dr. Olive Dickason (University of Ottawa - specialist in Native History); Dr. Veronica Strong-Boag (University of British Columbia specialist in women's history); Dr. Gregory Kealey (Dean of Graduate Studies, Memorial University of Newfoundland - specialist in labour history); and Dr. Gerald Friesen (University of Manitoba - specialist in the history of Western Canada). Scores of other historians for specific episodes and periods will also be consulted.

Many historians are helping in the development of this production including the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the National Library of Canada, Parks Canada, the National Archives of Canada, les archives nationales du Quebec, the McCord Museum, the Glenbow Museum, all provincial archives as well as archives in the UK, France, and in the United States. It is the producer's intention, in partnership with the private sector, to distribute the series to schools and libraries in every community in Canada. The related books and music, along with multi-media versions of this history, will be a rich resource for future generations. Canada - A People's History is a legacy for the Millennium. CBC/Radio-Canada has provided the core funding and is approaching Canada's major corporations and institutions to put together a fund to underwrite the production of this, the first History of Canada for the television age. So as to leave a legacy of the past for the next generation.
